How to find the right content

One of the most important elements of search engine optimisation is building out a hub structure; it also helps in creating new content and pages for your site. So how do we create a hub structure?

Let's say you sell widgets and want to rank for the term "widget", we start by determining the supporting terms, i.e.

  • Best widget
  • Brass widget
  • Widget on sale

We then look for ways to create supporting content and link all that content to the main widget page. It is easier to start with the heading and build the content from it. So headers we could use for our widgets are:

  • Five killer tips for finding the best widget
  • Why a Brass Widget might be what you need
  • The ultimate guide to finding widget on sale

On each of the above pages, we then use keyword anchor text to link to our main widget page, and thus creating a hub. Each hub page should link to the main widget page once. The keyword for these hub pages are the supporting terms, and then in your content, the anchor text needs to be the keyword on the main page.

Another way to find topics to write about is to use Google Adwords Keyword Search Terms (if you are running Ads that is). In the search terms, you can see the search term used that your ad was shown for and clicked on. You will find a few question searches which you can turn into a post with the question as the title and header of the page.

Google Business Listing

By Creating a local page for &&&& on Google My Business, your business information can show up in Google Maps, Google Search, and other Google properties. This is different from a standard Google Plus page. You will often see a Google Business listing out to the right of search results when you are searching for a particular business; it is like a free advertisement for your business.

  2. Go to https://www.google.com/business/

  3. By default, Google should offer the creation of a business listing. If not click on the three horizontal lines on the top left and click on "Create Business account."

  4. Once you have a new business page setup or you need to claim one, you will need to verify it before it goes live. To verify a business Google will post you a confirmation code. It generally takes 1-2 weeks to arrive.

Directory Listings

We recommend signing up to a few online directories to improve your site's citation. Before you start, you need some basic formatting to ensure you have consistent information across all directories.

Create a text file with the following details:

Business Name:
Sub title:
Site URL:
Address:
Phone number:
Mobile Number:
Email Address:

A brief overview of company (approx 100 words): Services (listed): Products (listed):

Be sure to pay attention to formatting as you want to try and have the same format across all directories. For example, the Business name needs to be identical on all directories. In some cases, a directory will have a rule that will break your formatting, like no spaces in a phone number. It is ok in these instances to change the format to suit, but overall you want everything based on the template form you have created.

Here are some free directories you can add your site to:
