Grooming Hides Behind Harmless: Behind the Campaign
In 2023, Bravehearts was awarded a partnership with Australian social purpose organisation, UnLtd, who connects the media, marketing and creative industries with charities working with at-risk children and young people.
This partnership connected Bravehearts with creative agency Engine Group, global media buying agency Wavemaker, and film production company Taxi Film Production, as well as many other individuals and companies, to bring a national child sexual abuse prevention campaign focusing on grooming to fruition. All agencies and companies provided their services, skills and time pro-bono for this groundbreaking campaign.
Grooming (specifically contact grooming) was chosen as the focal point for the campaign due to it being a preparatory process enacted by offenders in all forms of child sexual abuse. Furthermore, research shows that 79% of child sexual abuse survivors know their abuser, highlighting the vital need for parents and caregivers to be more aware of potential threats close to home.
The campaign launched nationally on June 1, 2025, across broadcast and digital TV, radio, print, out-of-home and digital. Scroll on to view examples of the campaign creative and learn more about the agencies and companies involved in bringing it to life.
THE CREATIVE
The Grooming Hides Behind Harmless creative concept was developed by Brisbane-based creative agency, Engine Group, based on thorough research and consultation with Bravehearts and survivors of child sexual abuse.
The idea was to demonstrate the subtle and manipulative process of sexual grooming, wherein an offender will work to build the trust of not just the child, but the adults around the child. Grooming behaviours can often seem ‘innocent’ or ‘harmless’, such as the groomer spending one-on-one time with the child, making the child feel special by giving compliments, gifts and treats, taking the child on outings, or encouraging outings. The child who is being groomed may enjoy the special attention, and the adults around the child may consider the groomer to be helpful, charming or kind. The real intent, however, of these seemingly harmless behaviours is to gain unquestioned and unsupervised access to the child for the purpose of perpetrating sexual abuse.
“The weight of this brief was immense. We weren’t just creating a campaign – we were contributing to a cultural shift that could protect countless children across the country. How do you begin to tackle something so repugnant, so confronting, that most people instinctively turn away? In our eyes, you stop it before it starts. By helping people recognise the signs early, and by encouraging parents to stay vigilant about who their children spend time with. To play even a small role in that kind of positive change isn’t just a creative challenge. It’s a responsibility. And it’s one we carried with real pride.” – Mike Fritz, Creative Director, Engine Group
TVC
Produced by Taxi Film Production and directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker, writer and actor Leah Purcell OAM, and shot by award-winning cinematographer Mark Wareham ACS, the film was shot over one day on location in Brisbane.
The resulting 60-second film, which can be seen nationally across television, digital and streaming, is a hauntingly beautiful piece of storytelling.

OUR COLLABORATORS

Leah Purcell OAM
Director of the Grooming Hides Behind Harmless TVC“When we sat down to debate the creative approach to this ad, I said, we’ve got to nurture the audience, because what we don’t want them to do is turn off. And whether that’s in the story that’s being told, the visual that the composition, in the shots that we’re grabbing, or the music, it’s important that our audiences stay with us, reads the information cards at the end, is emotionally affected.
We want the audience to be active, to go and be educated, to be empowered, to make a change in their lives, be aware. It’s all about prevention. I think as adults, we have to educate ourselves, and hopefully this ad motivates people to take that next step.
We all [worked on this ad] out of the goodness of our hearts. It was all pro bono and from our souls. We knew that this ad can and will make a difference. This campaign needs to be seen and to reach as many people as we possibly can.”

GM Queensland, UnLtd“We were fortunate to bring Bravehearts into UnLtd’s charity stable in July 2023 after learning about their important mission in the holistic prevention and education of child sexual abuse. We wanted to help create change for them using the power of our industry, which is the magic of the job we do at UnLtd.
Read MoreI was passionate about finding Bravehearts the best media and creative partners here in Queensland, where their head office is located, to help them get their important message and mission out to the world.
After one conversation with the incredible Jane Sullivan, MD of Wavemaker in QLD, she agreed to come on board, and all of a sudden, we had a very powerful path forward to driving change.
I was then introduced to Tim Weger, Mike Fritz and Di Grice at Engine Group, and in that first meeting, I knew we had found the right creative agency. Their passion for listening, questioning everything, and being fierce in their pursuit of understanding was evident.
Engine Group got to work with extensive research into the topic of child sexual abuse, and as a result, presented back this impactful concept, which was all about prevention and the ability to change the statistics – I will never forget the goosebumps and tears in the room that day.
It has truly been a career highlight bringing these incredible partners together to bring this important message to Australia, and I know I will reflect on this campaign for the rest of my career, knowing that we changed lives. What an absolute privilege.”

Tim Weger
Managing Director and Owner, Engine Group“After our first conversation with Bravehearts, the entire Engine team walked away absolutely horrified, not just by the shocking statistics around child sexual abuse, but because we didn’t know them. As a father to five beautiful daughters, I immediately started cycling through all the people my wife and I have ever let through the front doors of our home.
Read MoreIt was this impact that I wanted us to create in our work for Bravehearts. To stop people in their tracks and to get them thinking that this heinous crime happens everywhere. It simply doesn’t discriminate. Our work aims to normalise the conversation, address the stigma and importantly to empower people with the tools to recognise how child sexual abuse begins through grooming.”
As creators of positive change, we have a natural affinity with not-for-profits and have provided extensive pro bono support to some incredible charitable organisations over the years. However, the reason we committed to providing 100% pro bono services to Bravehearts was because we knew from the very first meeting with the Bravehearts team that they would trust us implicitly to deliver extraordinary work through the power of creativity. And every step of the way since that meeting, they’ve done exactly that. Demonstrating the power of a client–agency relationship built on kindness, mutual trust, respect, and collaboration – and the work is absolutely evidence of that.
We promised to partner with the very best production partners in town and leverage relationships built over the last 25 years. We’ve been humbled by the level of support received for Bravehearts, but not surprised – as there are some very big hearts in this town [Brisbane].
Securing internationally acclaimed Leah Purcell as our film director via our relationship with TAXI Film Production is just one of many gifts that continue to leave the Bravehearts team blown away.”

Jane Sullivan
Managing Director, Wavemaker Brisbane“Supporting Bravehearts on this campaign has been both a personal and professional privilege. I’ve spent my career using the power of media to connect with audiences and create meaningful, positive outcomes – and this campaign exemplifies that purpose in the most important way.
This campaign is not just about awareness – it’s about giving parents and caregivers real tools to recognise grooming behaviours and take action early. I’m incredibly proud of the Wavemaker Brisbane team and what we’ve delivered together with Bravehearts and Engine, and so grateful to our exceptional media partners for their generosity to ensure this important message reaches communities across Australia.”
