Self-care: So often talked about, but so little practised. As we barrel into the second half of the year, we want to offer you 20 self-care tips we hope you will use to help recharge your batteries and help you get to the finish line of 2023.
- Prioritise sleep
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine and create a sleep-friendly environment to promote restful sleep. - Practice mindfulness or meditation
Set aside time each day to focus on the present moment, allowing yourself to let go of stress and recharge. Meditation can help improve mental clarity and reduce anxiety. - Engage in regular physical activity
Find activities you enjoy and make exercise a part of your routine. Physical activity releases endorphins, improves mood, and boosts overall well-being. - Nourish your body with healthy food
Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Stay hydrated and limit your consumption of processed foods, added sugars, and unhealthy fats. - Set boundaries and learn to say no
It’s essential to establish healthy boundaries to protect your time and energy. Practice saying no to commitments that don’t align with your priorities or cause excessive stress. - Connect with loved ones
Foster meaningful relationships and spend quality time with family and friends. Cultivating social connections provides emotional support and enhances your sense of belonging. - Engage in activities you actually enjoy
Dedicate time to hobbies, interests, and creative outlets that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s painting, writing, gardening, or playing an instrument, make time for activities that make you happy. - Practice self-compassion
Be kind and understanding toward yourself. Treat yourself with the same level of care and compassion you would show to a loved one. Practice positive self-talk and forgive yourself for mistakes. - Unplug from technology
Take regular breaks from screens and disconnect from digital distractions. Spend time outdoors, engage in face-to-face conversations, and allow yourself to be present in the moment. - Don’t be afraid to seek professional help
If you’re struggling with your mental health or facing challenges that feel overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist, counsellor, or GP. They can provide guidance and support. Australia has a great free health care system, which includes a free mental care plan annually. A mental health care plan can be developed by your GP according to your needs, so don’t hesitate to make that appointment. - Practice gratitude
Take time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. This can help shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life and promote a sense of contentment. - Create a self-care routine
Develop a regular self-care routine that includes activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. This can be as simple as taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, or practicing yoga. - Engage in deep breathing exercises
Deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Take slow, deep breaths, filling your belly and then exhaling slowly. This can be done anytime, anywhere, and is especially helpful during moments of stress or anxiety. - Spend time in nature
Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body. Take walks in the park, go hiking, or simply sit in a garden or by the beach to enjoy the beauty of the natural world. - Practice self-reflection
Set aside time for self-reflection and introspection. Journaling or engaging in mindfulness practices can help you gain insight into your thoughts, emotions, and desires, leading to personal growth and self-awareness. - Engage in hobbies that promote relaxation
Find activities that help you relax and unwind. This could include practicing yoga, listening to calming music, taking up a craft, or enjoying a hot cup of tea. - Set boundaries with technology
Limit your screen time and establish boundaries with technology usage. Such a boundary could be removing your work emails from your personal phone or turning off your social media push notifications. - Take breaks at work
Take short breaks to stretch, practice deep breathing, or engage in a quick mindfulness exercise to rejuvenate your mind and increase productivity. - Get regular check-ups and prioritise your physical health
Schedule regular appointments with your healthcare provider for check-ups and screenings. Prioritise your physical health by staying on top of preventive care, maintaining a healthy weight, and addressing any medical concerns. Australia has a great free health-care system – use it! - Practice self-acceptance and embrace imperfection
Embrace your flaws and imperfections as a natural part of being human. Practice self-acceptance and let go of the need for perfection. Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them.
