A new study is looking into how to better support the parents of children who have been sexually abused.
The research project, Examining the Factors Influencing Posttraumatic Growth in Parents of Children who have Experienced Sexual Abuse, is being conducted by Bond University. It is seeking to explore the psychological factors that help some parents experience positive growth in the aftermath of the abuse committed against their child.
Bravehearts’ Director of Research, Carol Ronken, says this research will help to develop better ways of ensuring positive and effective support is available for parents, which will ultimately help them support their children heal from the harm.
“This research will contribute to a better understanding of what the parent of the child needs in order to recover after such a trauma. The reason this is important is because it is often the parent who has a vital role in supporting the child in the aftermath of the abuse. If practitioners can better help the parent, then they can better help the child,” says Ms Ronken.
If you are the parent of a child who has experienced sexual abuse, you are invited to participate in this research project by completing a questionnaire, which you can find here.
